The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, by Roger Williams

I expected to read this novella long ago, but it seemed too expensive for an ebook. However, encouraged by the good reviews (and a lower price) finally I have decided to buy the story, and I do not regret it.

First of all, I must say that the novella is just correctly written (this is the Roger Williams' first work), however it has an unique sense of wonder which raises very interesing questions.

The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect (1994) is a Singularity novel avant la lettre? Yes. A cyberpunk story? More than less, but the story not deals only about virtual reality; rather, it is a quantum reality.

In a certain perspective this book could be considered a dystopia, but it is known that it is a thin line which separates utopia and dystopia... You know, perfection could be a nightmare... If humanity banish all the wars, beats all the diseases; and so on with famine, discrimination, poverty... And then, what will we do? In this sense Roger Williams' novella remembers me the science fiction classic The Humanoids. Thus, It seems that this story is the great classic by Jack Williamson (written in 1959) translated to the state of the art of science and technology in our XXI Century.

But the book deals with more issues: what do humans do when they do not have limits or laws, when they do not have fears? What if normal people but also criminals could be immortals?

Caroline, the main character (and a great success in this novella), is a strong woman who wants to deal with a reality that she has not chosen and that she considers is a fake universe. How can she survive in this world? She finds her way, of course; but I can not explain it here, so I recommend you to read this story.

Hace tiempo que me llamaba la atención esta novela corta, pero encontraba el ebook demasiado caro. Finalmente, alentado por las buenas críticas (y un precio algo más bajo) he decidido comprarla y puedo decir no me arrepiento.

En primer lugar, debo señalar que es una novella correctamente escrita (es la primera publicación de Roger Williams) pero transmite sentido de la maravilla y plantea cuestiones muy interesantes.

¿The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect (1994) es una novela que trata de la Singularidad avant la lettre? Pues sí. ¿Pertenece al género cyberpunk? Más que menos, pero la historia no solo trata de realidad virtual; más bien, de realidad cuántica.

En cierta perspectiva, este libro también podría considerarse una distopía, pero es sabido la delgada linea que separa utopía y distopía... En otras palabras, la perfección puede convertirse en una pesadilla: si la humanidad consigue eliminar las guerras, superar todas las enfermedades; y así sucesivamente con el hambre, la discriminación, la pobreza... Y ahora ¿qué hacemos? En este sentido, la novela de Roger Williams me recuerda el gran clásico de ciencia ficción Los humanoides. Podría decirse que esta historia es la novela de Jack Williamson (escrita en 1959) trasladada a los conocimientos actuales en ciencia y tecnología.

Pero el libro también trata otras cuestiones: ¿qué hacen los seres humanos cuando no tienen límites o leyes, cuando no tienen nada que temer? ¿Qué pasaría si las personas normales, pero también los criminales, pudieran ser inmortales?

Caroline, la principal protagonista de esta historia (el personaje es un gran acierto), una mujer fuerte que quiere lidiar con una realidad que no ha elegido y que ella considera es un universo fake. ¿Podrá sobrevivir? Por supuesto, ella encuentra su camino, pero no puedo explicarlo aquí porque os destriparía la historia.

Así pues, para los que leáis en inglés os la recomiendo, no sé si estará disponible algún día en castellano.
