United States of Japan, by Peter Tieryas

As you can see next to these lines, so far this year I enjoyed a lot of good readings. And certainly one of the best has been United States of Japan, by Peter Tieryas.

United States of Japan is a curious novel. The book is also an ucronía and a science fiction novel, and as sure both facets have the aim to entertain, the novel has a plus to offer that makes a very interesting reading.

The beginning is unusual. Of course It is not the first author who writes a novel based on a work of another writer (this is something old, it come to my memory the sequels of Asimov's Foundation) (I have not read those, but I can imagine it is an alternate universe in which I won the lottery and have much free time to spare and it's worth reading the novels). In our case, Mr. Tieryas bases on the universe created by Philip K. Dick in his masterwork The Man in the High Castle. Of course, I could not do this review without making my homework so I had no choice but to pay attention to (ahem!) the cry of all the known galaxy that has always advised me to read it. As expected, I regret not having done it before, now I can understand why it is considered a masterwork.

Como podéis ver en la columna de Goodreads a la derecha de estas líneas, en lo que va de año he tenido ocasión de disfrutar de muy buenas lecturas. Y sin duda una de las mejores ha sido United States of Japan, de Peter Tieryas.

United States of Japan es una novela curiosa. A la vez ucronía y novela de ciencia ficción, ambas facetas están destinadas a entretener, pero con un sustrato de más que la convierte en una lectura muy interesante.

Para empezar el punto de partida es inusual. No es el primer autor que se basa en una obra de otro escritor (esto algo muy viejo, en el caso concreto de la ciencia ficción me vienen a la memoria las secuelas a las Fundaciones de Asimov) (no las he leído, pero puedo imaginarme un realidad alternativa en la que me tocó la lotería y disponía de miles de horas de tiempo libre y sí valía la pena leerlas). En nuestro caso el señor Tieryas se vale del universo creado por Philip K. Dick en su novela El hombre en el castillo. Por supuesto no podía hacer esta reseña sin hacer los deberes así que no tuve más remedio que hacer caso al ¡ejem! clamor de toda la galaxia conocida que desde siempre me habia aconsejado leerla. En fin, que me arrepiento de no haberlo hecho antes ¿Vale?
